- 2023: Let's go!
Hey everyone! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve updated the blog, I’m so sorry! WOW it is breeding season again! Feels like I haven’t even really had much of a break to be honest, but the birdies certainly feel quite differently. Lots of hormones going on with the nest boxes going in over the last few weeks. Bring on spring! KEMPSEY AUCTION IN NSW We are proud to announce we will be attending the first Mid North Coast Avicultural Society’s ‘Fly into Spring’ Bird Auction on Sunday the 24th of September, 2023 in Kempsey NSW. This is a great opportunity to get your hands on some awesome breeding pairs, save on freight costs and have a chat. We will have a fair few of our past season babies up for sale, so if you are interested in wetting your feet with mutation quaker breeding and want to have access to genetic support, please come and say hi! The auction will operate under the ‘bid card’ system, and you will be able to walk through and view all the birds before the auction starts at 10:30am. To see what quakers we are taking with us, click here: https://www.maranathaaviaries.com/aviary-for-sale NEW SPECIES ALERT: BOURKE’S PARROTS We are thrilled to have the chance to handraise some gorgeous little Bourke’s parrots this season, in two colours Rosa (opaline) and Cream (fallow). Bourke’s make such great, placid companion parrots in such gorgeous pinks and yellow hues. Their page on the website is in progress! Stay tuned 😁 COLOURS WE HAVE PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR Since we specialise in the less common mutations in both the conures and quakers, it is going to be an exciting season seeing what mutations end up being produced this year. In the green cheeks, we will of course still have our gorgeous single and double factor violets in turquoise combinations (straight, opaline, cinnamon and pineapple), plus the high red pineapples. In the quakers, we are able to produce a whopping 38 different colour combos this season! Of course, there is no guarantee to produce all of them but it certainly makes for a fun wait for those feathers to pop through 😁. There should be plenty of colours to choose from out of our normals, opalines, pallids, pallidinos and inos. Check out our comprehensive colour charts for each species by clicking the buttons below: THINKING OF A NEW FAMILY MEMBER THIS YEAR? - October Update
Happy Spooky Season! 👻👻👻👻 I hope you are well and enjoying this wonderful rain we've been blessed with the last few days. I know my young kids have appreciated the muddy puddles more than I appreciated the mess to clean up! It has been another busy month here, with two clutches of green cheeks, a couple of bourkes parrots and a gorgeous baby quaker baby which weighed a whopping 3.5g at hatch. In the incubator we have a few clutches of quaker eggs developing well; we even got to see the heartbeat in one and the umbilical cord in another! VIOLET & TURQUOISE GREEN CHEEKS Our first clutch of green cheeked conures for 2020/21 ended up with three sf violet turquoise pineapples, three turquoise pineapples and one sf violet turquoise. As of 26/10, all are sold except one violet. GREEN PINEAPPLES We now have a clutch of four high red green pineapples, with a gorgeous amount of orange and red from the belly all the way to the cheeks. They are growing well and are roughly 3-4 weeks old. (26/10: Three available) COMING UP Out in the nests, we have one pair on a clutch of four pineapple babies, and another two on eggs, which will give us our violets and non-violets in green and turquoise pineapple again. If you would like to be placed on our waiting list, send us a message and we will be more than happy to chat to you :) OUR LATEST ARTICLE Thinking of getting a new family member, and not sure if a parrot would be suited to your family? - August Update (and we have eggs!)
Happy Friday! I hope you have had a wonderful week so far, and life is starting to return to normal for you wherever you are. Our thoughts are with those in lockdown in Melbourne and surrounds. This month has brought some excitement here at the Aviaries, with both quakers and conures on eggs thus far in the season. We get a number of messages each week from excited new clients waiting eagerly to add a new friend to their family this season. Whether it be a quaker, a green-cheeked conure or a corella, we have you covered! Make sure you're following our Facebook Page for additional updates. Currently, we have two pairs of quakers and one pair of conures on eggs. Two of our younger pairs of quakers are busy building their nests and feeding each-other, as well as another handful of our conure pairs. The corellas have been shredding their nesting material and small sticks and spending a large amount of the day in their hollow. We anticipate we will have babies hatching in roughly a week-and-a-half to two weeks and can't wait to see which colours and sexes they are. While we can determine what the genetic probabilities will be from a pairing, the great joy is the surprise of which colours have been passed on this time. In the meantime, feel free to check out the resources we have here on our website, if you are thinking of adding a new family member in the coming months: Learn about Quakers Learn about Green-Cheeked Conures Learn about Little Corellas Until next time,
- September Update: Oh My Stars!
I know, I know, this blog post is a little late... But let me make it up to you with this mini photoshoot of tiny splooties (yes that's now my new name for baby birds) 🤣 WOW it's been a busy few weeks feeding, weighing, feeding again. We are in the midst of renovations so guess where the brooder/incubator set up is? Right beside my bed, which is terrible if you're a sleep light sleeper 😂😂. The first clutch of the 2020/2021 season is from a violet turquoise pineapple cockbird and turquoise hen, which has given me six beautiful hens and one cockbird (sold). Hens will either be violet turquoise pineapple or turquoise pineapple, and the cockbird violet turquoise or turquoise. We are now taking deposits for the handraised hens (plus future clutches), so if you were wanting to add a little baby to the family we may have just the fit for you! Green Cheeks In other aviary news, we have two more pairs on eggs, which will give us more babies in: Green Pineapple cocks/hens Violet Green pineapple cocks/hens) Turquoise Pineapple cocks/hens Violet Turquoise Pineapple cocks/hens We also have our pallid (cinnamon) and opaline (yellowsided) pairs, which shouldn't be too far away either. If you were looking to make unrelated breeding pairs, we also have you covered. Flick us a message to chat about genetics and what you want to achieve with your breeding program. We love to chat mutations and all the nitty gritties! Check out our curated chart of green cheeked conure colours here. Quakers Unfortunately our first eggs from our quakers didn't hatch, but it was early for the season. Our mature pairs have since gone down to nest again, so we remain hopeful that these babies will hatch now we have made some tweaks to our processes. We are expecting quaker babies in blue, cobalt, blue pallid, dark green, dark green pallid and cobalt pallid. I cannot wait to share these new exciting colours with you all! Are you thinking of adding a new bird to your family in the coming months? Are you unsure what species might be right for you? We have prepared some articles which might help your decision process, and you can check them out here: Learn about Quakers Learn about Green-Cheeked Conures Learn about Little Corellas Exciting New Products Coming Soon! We have been busily working on some designs and prototypes for something amazing to offer our wonderful clients and community, but shhh we can't share just yet! What do you think it will be? Or what would you like us to stock? And just one more, I can't resist those cutie little smiling faces! 😍😍 Until next time,
- Welcome! And July Update
Hi! We are so glad you are here! Let me take this moment to introduce myself; I'm Camille, mum of two little kids (aka noise covered in dirt) and a parrot lover through and through! I've been hangin' out with birds since my first cockatiel at the tender age of 3 years old, and my knowledge has grown exponentially since. We are located in the Lockyer Valley, Queensland, about 60 minutes west of Brisbane and 40 minutes east of Toowoomba. What 2020 Will Have In Store This coming season has brought many changes, and I couldn't be more thrilled for the weather to warm up again. We have upgraded our aviaries, upgraded our hand-rearing station, streamlined our processes and added 12 new breeding pairs of parrots. More Conures The last few years we have had our beloved green-cheeked conures in opaline and opaline-pallid (commonly known as pineapple). Now we have added parblue (also known as turquoise) and violet in green and parblue as well, which expands our variety immensely. All going well, we will be able to provide companions in: green opaline-pallid parblue parblue opaline parblue opaline-pallid violet green pallid violet parblue pallid violet green opaline-pallid violet parblue opaline-pallid violet parblue violet parblue opaline *Correct genetic terminology used above. The current market has some mutations named incorrectly. The common names given to these colours are: opaline as 'yellowsided', pallid as 'cinnamon', parblue (partial blue) as 'turquoise', opaline-pallid as 'pineapple'. Crazy Quakers! These are a brand new addition to our Aviaries and have so much potential in producing some amazingly uncommon colours in Pallid and Dark Factor. Do you want a quaker in a colour none of your friends have? We will have it this year for you 😍 Again, all going well we should have quakers in: green green pallid dark green dark green pallid blue blue pallid cobalt cobalt pallid albino* blue pallidino* *Pending testing of splits this season Corellas Last but not least, our gorgeous mature pair of little corellas has joined us from Feathered Friends Brisbane. They are the most affectionate, hilarious head-bobbing pair of angels and I can't wait to see how they go this season. July Update As of the end of July, we are preparing for the coming season. The birds are getting increased fresh portions, as well as the addition of sprouts and super nutritious things like beetroot, hemp seeds and more sunflower to keep the weight on over winter. A few pairs have been actively mating, others have been interested in the nest box. We plan to have conure babies hatching from the end of September and into October, and the quakers closer to Christmas. Don’t Forget to Subscribe and Join Our Waiting List! Opt in to our newsletter and you will be the first to know when this season's babies arrive, plus you'll also get informative articles sent straight to your inbox.
